About the Exhibition

The Twin Cities continue to face an acute shortage of affordable housing. Rents and home prices have greatly escalated over the past several years. More and more working families find themselves unable to locate and afford a place to live. As a result, thousands of individuals and families with children go homeless in our community.

The Family Housing Fund is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and expand quality affordable housing for families with low and moderate incomes in the seven-county metropolitan area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The McKnight Foundation and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul established the Fund in 1980. As a housing intermediary, the Fund brings together people, money, and expertise to support the delivery of affordable housing. Please visit our Web site at www.fhfund.org to learn more.

The Family Housing Fund believes that art and poetry can strengthen its public education efforts and be a powerful vehicle for evoking positive social change. To celebrate its 20th Anniversary and raise awareness of the growing need for affordable housing, the Fund sponsored “Home Sweet Home: An Affordable Housing Art Exhibit” in 2000. Due to the success of that show, the Fund decided to organize a second exhibition in 2005 called “Home Sweet Home Again.” The exhibit’s opening at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis was also a kick-off event for the Fund’s 25th Anniversary.

Artists and poets from the Twin Cities metropolitan area were invited to provide art and poetry that celebrated the importance of home and in recognized the great need for affordable housing. The resulting exhibition includes more than 100 new artworks and poems on the issues of homelessness, affordable housing, or the meaning of home. The show will travel to various locations throughout the Twin Cities during 2005-06. Check the exhibition calendar for an updated listing of when and where you can view “Home Sweet Home Again.”

This Web site features the artworks, poems, and accomplishments of the commissioned artists and poets. The Family Housing Fund is deeply grateful to them for using their unique talents to help convey the critical need for safe, decent, affordable housing for families and individuals in our community. The Fund would also like to thank Intermedia Arts for their partnership in this effort and our major public education initiative funders—The McKnight Foundation and The St. Paul Travelers Foundation. Without their support, this exhibition and supporting publications would not have been possible. Publications that feature the artworks and poems from Home Sweet Home Again include the Poetry Booklet and the Artist Booklet, and the Fund’s 2004 Annual Report.

If you have questions or comments about the show, would like to host the exhibition at your organization or company, or to order exhibition publications, please e-mail shawna@fhfund.org or call 612-375-9644, ext. 13.
