About the Exhibitions

Home Sweet Home

In 2000, to celebrate the Family Housing Fund’s 20th Anniversary and to raise awareness of the great need for affordable housing in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the Family Housing Fund sponsored “Home Sweet Home: An Affordable Housing Art Exhibit.”

Through the work of 23 local artists, the exhibit portrays a wide range of housing circumstances-from the stark images of homelessness to the celebrations of a family moving into its first home. Several artists worked with children living in affordable housing to create images of what it means to have a home. Also, the Family Housing Fund sponsored a poetry/essay contest for residents and children living in affordable housing. The winning entries are displayed with the exhibit.

The Family Housing Fund is deeply grateful to the artists, children, and residents who, through their talents and efforts, have helped us uniquely convey the importance of affordable housing in our community. The Family Housing Fund would like to especially thank The McKnight Foundation, The Travelers Companies (formerly The St. Paul Companies), and The Minneapolis Foundation for their contributions to the Family Housing Fund’s Public Education Initiative.

Home Sweet Home Again

In 2005, due to the success of the Home Sweet Home exhibition, the Family Housing Fund organized a second exhibition called “Home Sweet Home Again”. The Family Housing Fund believes that art and poetry can strengthen its public education efforts and be a powerful vehicle for evoking positive social change. The exhibit’s opening also served as a kick-off event for the Fund’s 25th Anniversary.

Artists and poets from the Twin Cities metropolitan area were invited to create art and poetry that celebrated the importance of home and recognized the great need for affordable housing. The resulting exhibition includes more than 100 new artworks and poems on the issues of homelessness, affordable housing, and the meaning of home.

The Family Housing Fund is deeply grateful to the artists and poets for using their unique talents to help convey the critical need for safe, decent, affordable housing for families and individuals in our community. The Family Housing Fund would also like our major public education initiative funders—The McKnight Foundation and The Travelers Companies.
